DISTRICT 1-BK CONVENTION AD BOOK INFORMATION
Jan-06-2024

Hello District 1-BK Lions,

The 10th Annual District 1-BK Convention will be held on April 12th and 13th, 2024 at the Bolingbrook Holiday Inn. That means it’s time to begin thinking about the 1-BK Convention Ad Book that is published in conjunction with the district convention.

The Ad Book is a great way to “toot” your club’s own horn for recent accomplishments or upcoming events, recognize that special Lion in your club, endorse a district candidate or anything else for which you want to brag. It’s also a good way for local businesses, perhaps including your very own, to advertise their wares at an economical price and reach a large circulation area.

I have included in this letter: “Ad Book Page Sizes and Costs”.

Please send payment to me when you submit your ads. If this is your first time with an ad in the convention book, you can simply email me the information you want included and I will send you a proof of the ad before sending it to the printer. If you have any questions, give me a call, text or send an email.

Criteria for the 1-BK Ad Book:
  • Send Ad Book material and payment by March 12, 2024 to PID Bud Wahl
  • Checks made out to “District 1-BK Lions”
  • Ad Book copy in PDF or Word format
  • Pictures in JPG format
  • Full Page AD $100 – 3 ½” x 8”
  • Half Page Ad $65 – 3 ½” x 4”
  • Quarter Page Ad (Business Card) $35 – 3 ½” x 2”
  • Sell 4 Complete Pages of ads and receive 1 FULL PAGE AD FOR FREE

Thanks for supporting District 1-BK with your Ad Book purchases and sales!

PID Bud Wahl,
Ad Book Chairman

Peace Poster Contest for 2023-2024
Sep-10-2023
Lions,

For over three decades, Lions clubs around the globe have been sponsoring a very special art contest in schools and youth groups. Creating peace posters gives children everywhere the chance to express their visions of peace and inspire the world through art and creativity.

To a young person, a dream isn’t just a wish, hope or desire — it’s a path, a goal, an ambition. But achieving that dream takes hard work. So, this year we’re asking young people to show how they’ll turn their dream of a peaceful world into reality.

Students ages 11, 12 or 13 as of November 15 are eligible to participate in the International Peace Poster Contest. Kits are available from the Club Supplies Sales Department at International Headquarters - www.lionsclubs.org - click on shop

To order a kit by phone, call Club Supplies Sales at (630) 571-5466 or 1-800-710-7822

Approach your local Grade Schools to participate.

Posters need to be turned in to DG John Whalen for the November 11th Cabinet meeting for District level voting. Contact your zone chair to have them bring your poster to the meeting or attend the meeting yourself and witness the fun and fellowship of a cabinet meeting.

Posters can be rolled up and mailed to: Lion John Joseph Honiotes / 1228 Massachusetts Ave. / Joliet IL 60435. Posters to be mailed must be in the mail by November 3rd.

The winning district poster will be taken to the December Council of Governor's meeting, December 2, 2023, for State level voting.

All posters will be returned to the clubs unless it becomes the state winner.

Candy day shortage
Aug-18-2023
My Fellow Lions,

Candy Day is the single largest fundraiser for the Lions of Illinois Foundation. We are all currently planning and preparing for our club’s events. This includes placing orders for candy from the Foundation.

On Tuesday August 8th, our supplier of the mint candy for candy day informed us there would be a delay in delivering our current order. This candy was ordered in December of 2022 and the delivery has been delayed twice already. There is a limited supply of mints available at the Foundation. We are asking the lions to work with us to make this supply stretch as far as possible.

All District depots will be bringing their candy supplies to Jamborees to be the first step in meeting clubs needs. This will be supported by additional candy brought by the foundation. We are also asking clubs that have already received candy for early events to evaluate their supplies at the end of their events and work with your Trustees to get remaining candy to clubs that have not yet received candy.

The Foundation has taken additional steps to provide other options for our Lions. There is a significant supply of sugar free suckers available for use. These suckers are provided at no cost to the clubs. Additionally, we have placed our annual order for Tootsie Pops earlier than normal. These cases hold 525 suckers each and will be available to the clubs for $75 per case.

When our candy order is delivered, the foundation staff will be working to get candy distributed to clubs that still need additional supplies.

Yours in Service,

Ronald Fruit

Lions Cybersecurity Alert!
Aug-15-2023
Lions Important Cybersecurity Note!
There is a scam going around, same as in the past. Someone using the email of liondistrictgovernor@gmail.com is asking people to send gift cards. Familiar scam, but stay alert.
Reminder to always confirm in person or on phone using contact info you already have and know to verify any requests that involve money. Never trust any contact info that comes to you in the same email message asking for money.
Be careful out there!!

Chicago Vision Walk Flyer (on June 4 at Elk Grove)
May-22-2023

As many of you know, I am the Event Manager for our 18th Annual Chicago VisionWalk taking place on Sunday, June 4 at Ned Brown Meadows of Busse Woods in Elk Grove. This is in support of the Foundation Fighting Blindness, the world’s largest private funder of retinal degenerative research.I’m hoping for four things from your club (although one or two would be great!):

1.           Allow me to present to your club, live or virtually, about our research and background. I’ve spoken to more than 1,000 Lions over the past few years. I will be leading one of the main training sessions at our upcoming 1F District Convention on social media.

2.           Support our Chicago VisionWalk as a sponsor (benefit sheet below).

3.           Volunteer at our walk in June.

4.           Help spread the word about our event.

As a Lion myself in Arlington Heights and South Milwaukee, I know the challenges our clubs have faced hosting our own events. But our Foundation’s mission has remained the same, to fund research to find treatments and cures for retinal diseases.

THANKS TO MANY LOCAL LIONS CLUBS, the Chicago walk is one of the top fundraising walks in the country, and I hope you will support those efforts to hit our goal! I have already received several Lions sponsorships, including a couple new ones, which is highly motivating.   It is an event that ties in directly with many Lions goals. Lions Clubs in general have a huge connection with the mission of our Foundation. In fact, our Founder, Gordon Gund, was named a True Visionary by Lions Magazine a few years ago, pictured here.

The Foundation hosts 40 walks across the country, and the Lions are a big part of those walks, as volunteers and fundraising teams. Our Chicago walk has at least 15 Lions Clubs as sponsors. Pictured above are 1F District Governor Chris Marks and 1st VDG Terry Dooley on stage last year addressing our audience. If you would like to find out more about the walk, you can go to Chicago VisionWalk. The 5K walk is a family-friendly event benefitting the entire state of Illinois and is free to anyone and everyone! We will have bounce houses, mascots, carnival games, facepainting, live band, and much more. We will also be serving a free lunch, prepared by my very own Arlington Heights Lions.

If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to e-mail me at SSroka@FightingBlindness.org, or call at (847) 370-4902. I can send any information you would need. Thanks a bunch!

Lion Steve

1BK -- Reminder to Intentionally Practice Safe Computing
Mar-23-2023
1BK Lions--Social Engineering and eMail phishing attacks are with us to stay.  They ebb and flow, but the moral of the story remains the same.  We are all targets, including Lions, and we must be vigilant when online 24x7x365.  We can never let our guard down.Common scams still include someone trying to contact you via email, text, or Facebook asking for you to buy gift cards and keep it on the down low.  Always a scam.  Also, you should not receive Facebook friend requests from people you are already friends with.  This means the other person has had their account hacked.  Do not respond to online FB messages from that person.  Always trust but verify.  You can always verify any request you get from someone by picking up the phone and calling them -- always a good rule of thumb, especially when money is involved.  All Lions club should have a process in place that includes multiple checks and balances before dispersing any money, and all steps should not be online.Attached are 3 documents that provide you with additional info on spotting red flags in email messages, detecting phishing message and identifying social engineering red flags.  Stay safe out there!!Lion Tom, 1BK IT Chair

DIGITAL SPEECH AID AVAILABLE FROM FRANKFORT LIONS CLUB

DIGITAL SPEECH AID AVAILABLE FROM FRANKFORT LIONS CLUB
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Lions:

Lion Judy Hageman came into possession of a Servox-digital speech aid from a couple who bought it for a parent who never used it. This device is specifically designed as an aid to people who have had their larynx removed because of cancer.

Lion Judy and I agreed to bring it to the membership, and to District 1 BK to see if anyone in one of our families, neighbors, or friends can benefit from this speech aid. The retail value of a device such as this can be as high as a thousand dollars. The Frankfort Lions will donate the device to someone in need.

Pictures of the device are below.

1BK Early Bird Drawing for LCIF Raffle
Jan-13-2023
Fellow 1-BK Lions,
I tried my first attempt at FaceBook live and held the drawing for the early bird prize of the 32 inch LED TV which was donated by the Frankfort Lions Club.
The winner of the early bird prize was the Normal Lions Club. Congratulations!
To view the drawing, go to my FaceBook page - John Joseph Honiotes - you should be able to find it.
Could not figure how to video the drawing and get it to attach to an email. I'm a moron when it comes to stuff like that and none of the grandkids were around to show me how.  Hopefully our IT guru 2nd Vice Governor Tom Drez can make it easier for you to get to my page.--->> Here it is: https://www.facebook.com/john.j.honiotes/videos/690901189335861
Thank you to the Clubs that have donated to LCIF by way of our district raffle.  We still have an early bird prize of $200.00 which will be given away at the District Banquet - winner need not be present - but we hope you are there.
Our grand prize drawing will be held at the District awards night in June - an overnight stay at Harrah's Casino Joliet, and a $100 gift certificate to use in their steakhouse restaurant.  The second prize that night is a NUWAVE Pressure Cooker. Again, winners need not be present - but we hope you attend.
If you or your club is planning on donating to LCIF this year, thank you very much.
I hope you will consider donating via the District Raffle.  Your Club will receive full credit at LCIF which can be used toward a Melvin Jones Fellowship and you will have the opportunity at the prizes being given away.   An order form for raffle tickets is attached to this email.
Thank you all again.  If you see the video you will understand why I've been told I have a face for radio.

Need Volunteers - USA Canada Lions Leadership Forum @ Reno on Sept 21-23, 2023
Dec-26-2022
Lions All,
The USA Canada Lions Leadership Forum will be held in Reno, Nevada, September 21-23, 2023.  If you are interested in registering, please go to
http://www.lionsforum.org   Registration includes four meals with motivational speakers and over 90 seminars.  The event will be held at The ROW in downtown Reno along with the Reno Ballroom and Reno Event Center.
To be honest as the General Chair, it would be great to see my family of Lions from Illinois and 1BK in attendance.  The event promises to provide learning experiences and sharing with other Lions that will improve and impact our service, membership and of course leadership, all of which then impacts our communities.
For those who are attending, please consider volunteering.  The Host Committee needs 350-400 volunteers.  If we have that many volunteers, no one will have to work too long.  A fillable PDF is attached or go to http://www.lionforum.org  Go to About, scroll down and click Host Committee.  The link for the volunteer form is there about half way down the page.  Please consider sharing a bit of your time.
Please let me know if you have questions about the Forum.  I am happy to share with clubs or districts!
Best regards,
Jama

1BK LCIF Fundraiser
Mar-15-2022
Dear District Lions,
The following is a letter mailed to all Club Presidents:

Lions Clubs around the globe are changing history every day with the many projects funded with grants from our Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF). Four years ago, LCIF launched Campaign 100, a $300 million fundraising effort to help meet the ever-growing service needs of our 48,000 Clubs and their 1.4 million members.  Our District has done well in playing our part in that fundraising.

June 30, 2022 is the finish line for Campaign 100.  As of today’s date, it has raised 87.2% of its 300 million goal.  1-BK continues to cheer on the Campaign as it completes its course.

We are announcing a new District Campaign 100 fundraiser.  First prize is a $300.00 gift card for Starved Rock Lodge.  The money can be used for an overnight stay, meals, and merchandise.  Second prize is a Fulgar-La Scappi indoor/outdoor electric grill.

An individual ticket will be $5.00. However, for every $20.00 donated by either a Club or a Lions member, you will receive 5 tickets. Example: donate $100.00 and receive 25 tickets.

Plus, all Club and individual member donations, will receive credit at LCIF towards a Melvin Jones Fellowship. ($1000.00 is needed to honor a member with a Melvin Jones Fellowship.)

The drawing for the 2 prizes will take place at the District Awards Night June 4, 2022 – winner need not be present to win. But as an incentive, there will be an Early Bird drawing during the District Convention banquet for all received entries for a 40 inch LED Smart TV.  And again, winner need not be present to win. That winning ticket will go back into the drum for the final drawing on June 4th.

Attached to this email is a form to fill out to send in your donation.  There is room on the form for the listing of individual members wishing to donate to the fundraiser. (The form is included in the mailing.)

Send the completed form and donation(s) back to:PDG John Joseph Honiotes
1228 Massachusetts Ave
Joliet, IL 60435(The letters have a return envelope included with the mailing). He will confirm your entry in the drawing by sending back your ticket stubs.

ALL CHECKS MUST BE WRITTEN TO ‘LCIF’.  Although cash is welcomed, donations via check would be preferred.

Thank you for helping your District cheer on Campaign 100 as it nears the finish line.

 PDG Sue Wolf
1-BK LCIF Coordinator

''Love for Maggie'' - 1BK Service Opportunity
Jan-31-2022
Hello District 1-BK Club Presidents, Club Secretaries and Club Service Chairs:
I am sharing news about Maggie DeVries, a 5-year old girl from Frankfort, IL, who was recently diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor located in her brain stem.  Perhaps you may have heard about Maggie; if not, please read her story at this link:
A friend of Maggie's family, Carrie Sapp, has organized a Valentine's Day card drive to collect homemade Valentine's Day cards for Maggie.  It would be wonderful to show an outpouring of support for the family through your club's participation in this card drive!  Please pass along this email to your club members. More information about the card collection can be found here: (19) Carrie Sapp | Facebook
Cards can be dropped off or mailed and must arrive by February 13 to the following address. You might also make a note on the envelope, "Love for Maggie".
Carrie Sapp
1123 Green Glen Court
New Lenox, IL  60451
  • For reference, I've attached a guidelines document for making homemade cards for kids living with cancer; and I hope you find it helpful.
  • Maggie's story also provides information about additional efforts to benefit Maggie and her family.
The February 1-BK chairperson's newsletter for Childhood Cancer is also attached.  February is Lions Clubs International's Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, and February 15 is International Childhood Cancer Day. This newsletter will also be posted on the District 1BK website at:  www.1bklions.org
Thank you for all you do in your club and district!
Please let me know if you have any questions.

If anyone would like to come down and help Serve, or make a donation, we would gladly accept either. You can reach me on my cell 815-861-0924 if you would like or my office 815-929-0924. My email address is pag2@amfam.com
Thank you very much for your support.

USA-Canada Forum COVID Precautions
Aug-30-2021

Update to Forum COVID Precautions

As the USA/Canada Lions Leadership Forum approaches, we unfortunately continue to see COVID cases continue to rise. Below are details of the precautions the Forum will be taking, but I wanted to highlight the significant change up front:

Due to some limitations in being able to maintain social distances during sanctioned Forum activities at the Iowa Events Center, face coverings are to be worn in the facility with limited exceptions (e.g. when eating or when you are able to be socially distanced).

I know there is a wide range of opinions and positions people have on the topic and it has unfortunately become highly politicized.  This is not a political decision, but a humanitarian one that closely aligns with our mission as Lions.  With attendees coming from all corners of the U.S. as well as Canada, the Caribbean, and other countries, we can help prevent the spread of the virus, protect others, and return safely to lead our communities into the future!  Thank you for your understanding.

Here are a summary of the preventative steps the Forum is taking:

  • As noted above, face coverings are to be worn during Forum events inside the Iowa Events Center, with limited exceptions.  This applies to attendees and facility staff.
  • Face coverings will be available in Forum offices and seminar rooms if anyone needs, forgets, or damages theirs.
  • For meal sessions, we are planning on 6 people/table (instead of the standard 10) to allow for more distance when masks are removed by necessity for eating.
  • Seminar room chairs will be hooked together in rows to maintain order, so they will be close.  However, there will be a little more room than usual between rows to allow for easier passing between people, and the seating will be “overset” for the expected number of attendees, giving flexibility for people who want extra space around them.  The Lions University Graduation is likely to be an exception, as graduates may need to be seated close together to accommodate everyone.
  • Sanitizing wipes will be available in seminar rooms for microphones or other high use surfaces.
  • Hand sanitizer stations are available throughout the facility

For other activities surrounding the Forum outside the Iowa Events Center, the CDC/Polk County (Iowa) guidance that face coverings should be worn regardless of vaccination status applies.  This includes areas where attendees have greater control on social distancing, such as private gatherings, hotels, Skywalk, transportation, etc. There are no specific guidelines for outdoor activities.

Here are a few public references that may be helpful to you:

Additional information about the Forum will be coming next week, but for now, here  is a link to the video and handout of the First Timer's virtual session held on Thursday, August 26.

am so proud of the amazing event that we have planned, including several unique features or opportunities that I haven’t experienced in my 19 prior Forums.  We want each of you to leave Des Moines charged, ready to lead, and remembering #LionsForum2021 for all the right reasons!

I look forward to seeing you in two short weeks!

Wendy Cain

1BK Annual Candy Day Jamboree Info (on 9-22) @ Marseilles
Aug-16-2021

Hi Lions,

Attached is the flyer for the 1-BK Candy Day Jamboree Food Reservations.  The prices from Chef Mike are the same as 2 years ago – we got a deal!

Please promote the Jamboree when you have club meetings and make visits.  Thanks.

Clubs should preorder their candy by calling the LIF office (815-756-5633) even if they will pick up their candy at the Jamboree, so the LIF office knows how much candy to bring.

If anyone has any questions, contact 1-BK Trustees John or Joe or CT Bird.

Lions of 1BK,

We have an opportunity to serve and support a club within our district.  Gibson City has suffered from a recent flood.  I have spoken to their club president, Matthew Brown, as well as the assistant Fire Chief.  I made a visit to see the devastation.  I have shared my concerns with the 1BK Leadership Team.  We want to help in an organized fashion.

For the short term, the good people of Gibson City need clothing and school supplies.  Donations will be collected by each Zone Chair and then shared with the Gibson City residents.  Zone chairs are listed with a contact phone number.  Emails addresses are listed in the 1BK District Directory.

For the long term, I have spoken to staff of the Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF).  There are reconstruction grants available for clean-up efforts, rebuilding, etc.  The staff at LCIF will be working with us to determine the best grant available to allow the most support for Gibson City.

Lions of 1BK, your support is needed for our fellow Lions and the good citizens of Gibson City.  Please consider donating clothing and school supplies to your Zone Chair or a making a monetary donation.

Thank you for serving from the heart,

District 1BK TV Raffle Winners

Dear District Lions,

Thank you to all the Clubs and individuals who donated to our Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) this year.  Whether your donation was made direct to LCIF or you made your donation via our District Campaign 100 TV Raffle, my sincere thank you in supporting LCIF and 1-BK.

Our TV raffle raised $5,630 this year. Even with covid restrictions in place and not being able to promote this fundraiser face-to-face, the Clubs and individuals came through and we topped last year's ticket sales by $155.00.  So again, thank you.

Of the money raised, $4,590.00 was credited to Clubs or individuals who purchased tickets, and $1040.00 was credited to our District. This means that the many Clubs that participated received credit at LCIF which in turn will allow those Clubs to come closer to honoring one of their Club members as a Melvin Jones Fellow.; $1000.00 is needed for this honor.  Our District raised enough to honor a future MJF recipient, or as a former Past International President referred to a person so honored as a 'Jones Boy'.

The winners were drawn at the District Awards night this past Saturday evening. The winners are:

Morris Lions Club       55 inch Sharp TV
Bolingbrook Lions          55 inch TCL TV
Lion Sue Roy - Lemont  32 inch OMN TV
Frankfort Lions               32 inch OMN TV
Coal City Lions               Phaff Sewing Machine

Thank you to the Frankfort Lions for their underwriting the cost of the printing of the tickets and the Sharp and OMN TVs. Thank you to the Watseka Lions who donated the TCL TV they won last year.  And a final thanks to Lion Ken Roberts of the Joliet Noon Club and Roberts Sewing Center for the donation of the sewing machine.

Yours in Service,

Lion John Joseph Honiotes
PDG / 1-BK LCIF Coordinator

MD1 Call to State Convention (May 15th via Zoom)
Mar-07-2021
OFFICIAL CALL TO THE MD-1 STATE CONVENTION
May 15, 2021 via Zoom

Hello Fellow Lions and Leos of MD-1,

Our 100th Annual MD-1 Convention will be held May 15, 2021.  Because of the pandemic restrictions related to the size of gatherings, this year’s convention will be held virtually via ZOOM. All Lions and Leos are invited to attend.

This will be the first – and hopefully only – virtual state convention.  The convention committee has spent a lot of time and effort working on this event.  I want to thank State Convention Chair Lion Terri Pasternik for her efforts working through uncharted waters this year.

Agenda
Because this is a virtual event there will be no charge for attending so you don’t have to leave the comfort of your home. The agenda is still being finalized but we expect the first plenary session to run from 1:00 to 3:00, followed by district caucuses and voting, with the second and final plenary session running from 6:00 to around 8:15.

Some of the highlights include hearing from our International Guest, recognition of State and International Presidential award recipients, a necrology service, voting on 4 constitutional resolutions, the announcement of the LIF Sight-And-Sound Sweepstakes winners, the revealing of next year’s Council Chair and State Chairs, and six gift card giveaways.

International Guest
Our International Guest this year is Past International President Clem Kusiak.  PIP Clem is excited to be visiting with the Lions of Illinois and we look forward to having him with us via Zoom on May 15 th.

Registration
As stated earlier, registration is free this year but to attend or be a delegate you must register.  The registration link and information will be sent out within the next day or two.

Voting Information
This year’s election will be held using Election Runner, an approved LCI electronic election program.  All voting will occur between 3:00 PM and 5:45 PM on Saturday, May 15, 2021 using this software.

Delegates
Clubs will be entitled to the number of delegates based on their membership according to Lions International as of April 1, 2021. Each Club gets 1 delegate per 10 members or major fraction.

Example – a Club with 26-34 members gets 3 delegates.  A Club with 35-44 members gets 4 delegates.  PDGs should be listed as delegates and do not count toward the club’s number of allowed delegates.

Each Club will return their delegate form, to be received by their district Secretary by no later than May 5, 2021.

Then, each district Secretary will submit Club delegate forms to the State SST - to be received by the SST no later than May 10, 2021.

Your Club MUST be in Good Standing to be able to vote – that means the Club is current with their District and MD-1 State dues by April 30, 2021. This is 15 days prior to the convention in accordance with the MD-1 C&BL.

Once your Club’s delegate form is received by SST Mary and your Club is verified to be in good standing, CC Joe Vinyard will issue an email to each delegate with their unique Username and Password for the Election Runner software during the week of May 10, 2021.

Delegates MUST have an email address to be able to vote.

Delegates MUST be registered for the convention.

Resolutions
Attached to this email are the 4 constitutional Resolutions that will be on the ballot this year.

Please bear with us as we work though some unprecedented circumstances to put on a successful convention for the Lions of Illinois.  We look forward to “seeing” you on May 15 th at our 100 th state convention.

Thank you for all you are doing to serve your communities!!

Joe Vinyard
MD-1 Council Chairperson
